    MA Dissertation Research Proposal

Title of your Research _The effect of using monolingual and bilingual dictionaries on ESL learners’ vocabulary

    1. Motivation of the study (i.e. why you want to do the study  e.g. identification of the problems)

Learning vocabulary is one of the most important elements in learning a foreign language. Dictionary as a source of vocabulary learning can be really helpful for learners of English as a Second Language (ESL). There are many kinds of dictionaries on the market for both teachers and students to choose from, but which one is the most desired is still a debated question. Therefore, it is very necessary to investigate the different effect of using monolingual and bilingual dictionaries on ESL learners’ vocabulary.

    2. Relevant existing studies (a list of studies with a brief summary and what's lacking in these studies)

    1. Hunt and Beglar (2005) maintain that dictionaries help increase learners’ reading comprehension speed, and help students remember and use new words accurately as well as appropriately.
    2. Dictionaries are also found to be effective in raising students’ awareness between L1 and L2 translations, and in boosting their linguistic competence at the word level between L1 and L2.
    3. Eaves (2011) as well as Yun and Jia (2003) have discovered that so-called “Chinese English” results from language substitution associated with learners’ experience when they inadvertently adopt or assimilate many of the cultural perspectives and factors from their L1.
    4. The advantages of using bilingual dictionaries can be seen as Nation (2008) maintains that learning L2 vocabulary is faster if the meaning of the word is provided in the L1 first. Folse (2004) as well as Lotto and de Groot (1998) also conclude that L2 learners have higher word retention rates if the L1 translations and definitions are provided.
    5. Rundell (1999) maintains that using monolingual dictionaries may maximize L2 learners’ language capacity from the L2 exposure and contextualization that these dictionaries provide.

Although an extensive body of L2 vocabulary instruction literature exists, the issue of dictionary use in terms of its categories in ESL classrooms has so far been little researched and reported. The number of such empirical studies available in the literature is minimal, with inconclusive findings regarding the debate over bilingual versus monolingual dictionaries for effective L2 vocabulary acquisition

    3. Research questions/hypotheses

    1. Is there a significant difference between the use of bilingual and monolingual dictionaries regarding learners’ L2 vocabulary learning?
    2. Can bilingual or monolingual dictionaries be used to stimulate L2 learners’ interest, confidence and learning attitude?

    4. Methodology

    4.1. participants

40 Liverpool university students aged over 18

4.2. materials (e.g. research instruments, coursebooks for evaluation)
